Axion Estin Theotokos Mount Athos Framed Canvas Icon

Known as Axion Estin, meaning ‘It Is Truly Meet,’ this icon is bound up with a remarkable event upon Mount Athos, in which an angel is said to have appeared to a monk and taught him a hymn of praise to the Mother of God previously unknown within the Church, beginning with the words that now give the icon its name. So moved was the monk by what he heard that he asked the angel to write the hymn down, only to find afterward that the stone slab on which it had been inscribed had softened beneath the angel's finger like wax, a sign taken by the Church as confirming the hymn's heavenly origin. The hymn itself, now sung in churches throughout the Orthodox world, proclaims the Theotokos as more honourable than the Cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim.
