Archangel Jegudiel Framed Canvas Icon
Archangel Jegudiel, whose name signifies Glorifier of God, is honoured within Orthodox tradition as the angel entrusted with encouraging and rewarding those who labour faithfully for the glory of God, while also calling back toward diligence those who grow slothful or careless in their service to Him. He is traditionally depicted holding a crown in one hand, a sign of the reward awaiting the faithful labourer, and a whip or scourge in the other, a sign of the discipline that calls the negligent back to their duty. Counted among the seven archangels honoured each November in the Synaxis of the Bodiless Powers, Jegudiel stands as a reminder that the Christian life is one of active labour rather than passive observance, a race to be run with full effort rather than half measures. Though Scripture does not record him by name, the Church has long entrusted to his care the encouragement of every soul striving to serve God faithfully.
“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” (Revelation 22:12)
O holy Archangel Jegudiel, who dost strengthen those who labour for the glory of God, encourage us in our own labours, and grant us the crown prepared for those who remain faithful to the end. Amen.
