In the fourteenth century, three young members of the Lithuanian royal court, Anthony, John, and Eustathius, were martyred in Vilnius for refusing to renounce their Orthodox faith, becoming the first canonized saints of the Lithuanian lands. Their witness still marks a small but unbroken community here, carried now close against the cold the way conviction is carried close to the chest.
