Painted in the fifteenth century by the monk Andrei Rublev, this icon of the Holy Trinity is regarded as one of the supreme achievements of the whole iconographic tradition. It depicts three angelic figures seated about a table in quiet communion, an image drawn from the appearance of three visitors to Abraham at Mamre, which the Church has long understood as a veiled revelation of the Trinity to the patriarch. The gentle harmony of colour, gesture, and form within the composition expresses, so far as created art is able, the mystery of three Persons united in one essence, sharing a single love that overflows toward all creation. This icon has been copied and venerated across the Orthodox world ever since, and brought into the home, it offers a daily invitation to contemplate the very life of God.
