Saviour Not Made By Hands Framed Canvas Icon
Known as the Mandylion, this icon depicts the countenance of Christ as it is said to have appeared miraculously upon a cloth, an image tradition holds was not painted by any human hand but left directly by the Saviour Himself. According to the account preserved within the Church, the image was sent to King Abgar of Edessa, who had written to Christ seeking healing, and who received in return this living likeness of His face. Because of this origin, the Mandylion has long been regarded as the archetype of all icons of Christ, the witness and warrant for the Church's confidence that the invisible God may rightly be depicted, since He once took upon Himself a true and visible human face. It remains one of the most theologically significant images in the whole of Orthodox iconography, and makes a profound gift for anyone seeking to understand why icons are venerated within the Church.
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory.” (John 1:14)
O Christ our God, who didst leave to us the image of Thine own most pure countenance, grant that beholding Thee through this icon, we may be transformed ever more into Thy likeness. Amen.
