Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev ruled at first as a notably fierce pagan warrior prince before undertaking a deliberate search for the true faith, sending envoys to examine the religious practices of neighbouring peoples and famously receiving from them an account of the splendour and beauty of Orthodox worship witnessed in Constantinople, an impression that decisively shaped his choice. He received baptism himself around the year 988 and then ordered the mass baptism of his people in the waters of the Dnieper River, an event remembered as the Baptism of Rus and regarded as the foundational moment of Christian civilisation across the lands that would become Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus alike. The transformation in his own character following his conversion was widely remarked upon by those who had known him before, as the same prince once known for ruthlessness became known instead for generosity toward the poor and a markedly gentler rule. He is honoured, like his grandmother Olga before him, with the title Equal to the Apostles, in recognition of having brought an entire nation to the Christian faith.
