Saint Thomas the Apostle Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Thomas, sometimes called Didymus, meaning the Twin, is remembered above all for his honest doubt following the news of Christ's Resurrection, refusing to believe the testimony of the other apostles until he could see and touch the wounds for himself. When Christ appeared a week later and invited him to do precisely that, Thomas responded not with continued doubt but with one of the most direct confessions of faith found anywhere in the Gospels, declaring Christ to be his Lord and his God. Far from condemning him, Christ gently noted that those who would believe without such proof would be especially blessed, a teaching the Church has long treasured as a word of comfort for every believer who struggles with doubt. Tradition holds that Thomas went on to carry the Gospel as far as India, where a Christian community traces its origins directly to his mission, and where he was eventually martyred for his unwavering witness.
“And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.” (John 20:28)
O holy Apostle Thomas, who didst doubt before thou didst believe, intercede for us in our own moments of doubt, that we too may come at last to confess Christ as our Lord and our God. Amen.
