Saint Theodore Stratelates Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Theodore, distinguished from Theodore the Recruit by the title Stratelates, meaning the General, held a position of significant military command in the city of Heraclea under the Roman Empire, a rank that made his open profession of Christianity all the more striking to those who served under him. When he refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, he was arrested and subjected to torture of exceptional severity, including crucifixion, yet tradition holds that he was miraculously healed and strengthened during the course of his suffering, surviving torments that should by every expectation have killed him outright. He was eventually martyred by beheading, his courage under such prolonged torment leaving a deep impression on those who witnessed it, including, according to some accounts, conversions among the very soldiers assigned to guard him. Like Saint George, with whom he is sometimes associated in popular memory, he came to be honoured as a powerful patron of soldiers, his combination of military rank and unwavering faith offering a model for those called to serve in positions of earthly authority while remaining faithful to a higher one.
