Saint Prince Lazar of Serbia Framed Canvas Icon
Prince Lazar ruled as the leading Serbian nobleman during a period of mounting pressure from the advancing Ottoman Empire, and in the year 1389 he led the assembled Serbian forces against a vastly larger Ottoman army on the field of Kosovo. Serbian tradition holds that on the eve of the battle, Lazar was offered a choice between an earthly kingdom secured through compromise and a heavenly kingdom secured through faithful sacrifice, and that he chose the latter, accepting the near certainty of defeat and death rather than abandon his people and his faith. He died upon that battlefield alongside much of the Serbian nobility, and the defeat that followed came to be remembered not merely as a military catastrophe but as a defining act of national and spiritual witness, woven for centuries afterward into Serbian epic poetry and liturgical memory. He is venerated as a martyr-prince whose relics rest at the Ravanica Monastery, and his witness continues to shape how the Serbian Orthodox people understand the relationship between earthly defeat and spiritual victory.
“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36)
O holy Martyr-Prince Lazar, who didst choose the heavenly kingdom over the earthly, intercede for us, that we too may value the things that endure above the things that quickly pass away. Amen.
