Saint Paisios, born in Greece in the early twentieth century, served in the military during a period of considerable conflict before entering monastic life on Mount Athos, where he spent decades in ascetic struggle marked by deep prayer, extended fasting, and a notable gift for discerning the hidden needs of those who sought his counsel. Pilgrims travelled from across Greece and beyond to receive his advice, drawn by both his evident holiness and his remarkable sense of humour, which softened even his most direct and challenging guidance. He endured prolonged physical suffering in his final years with the same patience he had shown throughout his life, continuing to receive visitors and offer comfort even as his own health steadily declined. Canonised by the Orthodox Church in 2015, he is regarded as one of the most influential spiritual elders of the modern era, his recorded sayings and published writings now read throughout the Orthodox world and beyond.
