Princess Olga ruled Kievan Rus as regent following the death of her husband Prince Igor, governing with notable skill and firmness during her son's minority and later as a respected elder stateswoman even after he came of age. She travelled to Constantinople and there received baptism into the Christian faith, becoming the first ruler of Kievan Rus to embrace Christianity, though her own son Sviatoslav remained committed to the old pagan ways throughout his reign and showed little interest in following his mother's example. Undeterred, Olga continued quietly to plant the seeds of the Gospel within her household and her realm, and it would fall to her grandson Vladimir, a generation later, to bring about the formal Christianisation of the entire Rus people. For this reason the Church honours her with the rare title Equal to the Apostles, recognising in her patient and largely unseen labour the true beginning of a transformation that would eventually reshape an entire nation.
