Having survived the flood that swept away the corrupted world he had once known, Noah received from God a covenant marked by the sign of the rainbow, a promise that the earth would never again be destroyed by such a flood, becoming in this way both a witness to divine judgement and the recipient of a renewed divine promise extended to all the generations that would descend from him. The Church has long understood the ark itself as a foreshadowing of salvation through the Church and the waters of baptism, making Noah's righteous obedience amid an unrighteous age a model that continues to speak to every generation that finds itself surrounded by indifference to the things of God.

“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house.” (Hebrews 11:7)

O holy and righteous Noah, who didst remain faithful amid an unfaithful generation, intercede for us, that we too may hold fast to obedience even when the world around us sees no reason for it. Amen.
