Saint Joseph, a humble carpenter and descendant of King David, was betrothed to the Virgin Mary when he discovered she was already with child, and being a righteous man unwilling either to expose her to public shame or to violate the purity he had observed in her, he resolved quietly to separate from her until an angel appeared to him in a dream, revealing that the child she carried had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and instructing him to take her as his wife without fear. He obeyed at once, providing for Mary and the infant Christ with the same quiet faithfulness he would show throughout the years that followed, including leading the family into exile in Egypt to escape the murderous intentions of King Herod and later returning them safely to Nazareth once the danger had passed. Though Scripture records relatively little of him directly, what it does record reveals a man of profound obedience, willing to set aside his own understanding and reputation in order to fulfil the role entrusted to him in the unfolding of God's plan. He is remembered as the foster-father of Christ and the quiet, steadfast guardian of the Holy Family, honoured by the Church as a model of humble and selfless service.

O holy Joseph, guardian of the Theotokos and foster-father of Christ, intercede for us, that we too may obey God's call even when it asks more of us than we expected to give. Amen.
