Saint Ivan, known in English as John of Rila, withdrew as a young man from ordinary life to live as a hermit in the remote and rugged Rila mountains of Bulgaria, embracing a life of extreme asceticism that included long periods of solitude within mountain caves, sustained by little beyond what the harsh terrain itself could offer. Disciples gradually gathered around him drawn by reports of his holiness, and the monastic community that grew from his hermitage became the Rila Monastery, which would go on to become the single most important spiritual and cultural centre in the whole of Bulgarian history. During the long centuries of Ottoman rule that followed, when Bulgarian language, literacy, and Orthodox identity faced sustained pressure, the Rila Monastery served as a vital refuge preserving precisely those things, copying manuscripts and maintaining a continuity of faith and culture that might otherwise have been lost entirely. He is venerated as the patron saint of Bulgaria, and the monastery he founded remains to this day one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in the entire Balkan region.
