Saint Ephraim lived as a monk in Greece in the early fifteenth century before suffering a prolonged and brutal martyrdom at the hands of Ottoman authorities, a death so severe that he came to be regarded among the New Martyrs, those Orthodox Christians put to death under later periods of foreign rule rather than during the persecutions of the ancient Roman Empire. For centuries afterward, his memory faded almost entirely from record, until his relics were unexpectedly and miraculously rediscovered in the twentieth century at the monastery of Nea Makri near Athens, an event that renewed devotion to him almost overnight. Since that rediscovery, an extraordinary number of healings, particularly concerning illnesses affecting children, have been attributed to his intercession, drawing pilgrims to his shrine in numbers that continue to grow. He stands as a striking example of how a saint's memory, however long forgotten by human record, remains held fully in the memory of God.
