Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Dionysios, born into a noble family on the Greek island of Zakynthos in the sixteenth century, served first as a bishop before withdrawing later in life to embrace the quiet discipline of monasticism, seeking a life of prayer away from the responsibilities he had carried for so long. He is remembered above all for an extraordinary act of mercy, sheltering and ultimately forgiving the very man who, unknown to his pursuer, had murdered the saint's own brother, choosing reconciliation over the justice he might rightly have demanded. This singular act of compassion, more than any other event in his life, has shaped how the Church remembers him, a living demonstration that the Gospel command to forgive extends even to the most painful and personal of wrongs. He is venerated as the patron saint of Zakynthos, where his relics continue to be honoured by the island's faithful.
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” (Matthew 6:14)
O holy Father Dionysios, who didst forgive even the murderer of thine own brother, intercede for us, that we too may find the grace to forgive what seems impossible to forgive. Amen.
