Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Bartholomew, widely identified by the Church with the Nathanael named in the Gospel of John, was brought to Christ by his friend Philip and, upon meeting Him, was greeted with words that revealed Christ already knew him intimately even before they had met, prompting Bartholomew to declare at once that Christ was the Son of God and King of Israel. Christ in turn praised him as an Israelite in whom there was no deceit, a mark of the sincere and guileless character for which the saint has long been remembered. Tradition holds that following the Ascension, Bartholomew carried the Gospel to distant regions including India and Armenia, where he was eventually martyred, according to one of the most widely received traditions, by being flayed alive for his unwavering witness to Christ. He is honoured among the Twelve Apostles as a model of honest and unguarded faith, the kind that recognises truth the moment it is encountered.
“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” (John 1:47)
O holy Apostle Bartholomew, found by Christ to be without deceit, intercede for us, that our own hearts may be made as honest and as open to the truth as thine. Amen.
