Saint Barbara the Great Martyr Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Barbara, daughter of a wealthy pagan official in the early fourth century, was raised in seclusion by her father, who hoped to shield her from outside influence, yet she came to embrace Christianity in secret through her own study and conviction despite having had little direct contact with other believers. When her father discovered her faith, he reacted with fury, ultimately handing her over to the authorities himself rather than permit her conversion to stand, and she was subjected to severe torture before her eventual execution. Tradition holds that her father met a sudden and violent death shortly after carrying out her sentence, an event the faithful came to associate with divine judgement upon his betrayal of his own daughter. She is widely venerated as a protector against sudden and unprepared death, a devotion that has made her one of the most frequently invoked saints in moments of danger throughout the Orthodox world.
“He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37)
O holy Great Martyr Barbara, who didst choose Christ even above thy own father, intercede for us, that we may be protected from sudden death and prepared always to meet the Lord. Amen.
