Saint Alban the Protomartyr of Britain Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Alban, a Roman-British citizen of the town of Verulamium in Britain, sheltered a Christian priest fleeing persecution within his own home, and was so deeply moved by witnessing the priest's faith firsthand that he himself converted to Christianity during the course of their time together. When soldiers came searching for the priest, Alban exchanged clothing with him to allow his escape, presenting himself in the priest's place and accepting arrest so that the man he had sheltered might go free. Once the deception came to light, Alban was ordered to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods in place of the priest he had impersonated, and upon his firm refusal he was tortured and beheaded, becoming remembered as the first recorded Christian martyr of Britain. The town that grew around the site of his martyrdom came to bear his name, Saint Albans, and the cathedral later built there remains one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in English Christian history, honouring a witness given many centuries before the later division between the Christian East and West.
