Xenia, a young widow in eighteenth century Saint Petersburg, was overwhelmed by grief at the sudden death of her husband and, in response, gave away every possession she owned, took to wearing his old military uniform, and began a life of homeless wandering through the city's streets that would continue for several decades. Considered by many of her contemporaries to be a fool, she embraced what the Church calls foolishness for the sake of Christ, a deliberate renunciation of worldly reputation and comfort undertaken for the sake of deeper spiritual freedom, and she was known to spend entire nights in secret prayer in the open fields outside the city. Tradition holds that she quietly assisted in carrying bricks at night for the construction of a church at the Smolensk cemetery, work that went unnoticed until long after her death, and that she possessed a gift of insight into the future that she used gently to guide and warn those who crossed her path. She remains one of the most beloved saints in Russia today, especially invoked by those seeking a spouse, a stable home, or healing within their family.

O holy Xenia, fool for Christ, who didst surrender all worldly comfort and reputation for the sake of unseen prayer and hidden labour, intercede for us, that we too may seek the wisdom of God above the wisdom of this world. Amen.
