Nicholas II reigned as the last Tsar of Russia during years of mounting social unrest, war, and revolutionary upheaval that would ultimately bring down the centuries old Romanov dynasty entirely. Following his forced abdication in 1917, he and his family were held in increasingly restrictive captivity, first within Russia's interior and finally in the city of Yekaterinburg, where in July 1918 they were executed by Bolshevik forces in the basement of the house in which they had been confined. The Church's recognition of Nicholas as a saint rests not upon a judgement of his record as a ruler, a matter still debated among historians, but specifically upon the manner in which he and his family met their deaths, bearing captivity and the certainty of execution with prayer, patience, and an absence of bitterness that those who guarded them frequently noted. He is venerated, alongside his wife and children, as a New Martyr of Russia, among the many thousands of Orthodox Christians who were put to death during the early decades of Soviet rule for their faith and their refusal to renounce it.
