Saint Theodore Tiron Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Theodore served as a young recruit in the Roman army stationed in the region of Pontus in Asia Minor, a position from which he draws his title Tiron, meaning the Recruit, distinguishing him from another soldier-martyr of the same name remembered later in the Church calendar. When ordered to take part in pagan sacrifice along with his fellow soldiers, he refused outright and, according to tradition, set fire to a temple dedicated to a pagan goddess as an open act of defiance against the worship demanded of him. Arrested and subjected to prolonged torture intended to force his recantation, he remained unmoved in his confession of Christ and was eventually put to death by fire for his refusal to comply. Centuries after his martyrdom, tradition holds that he appeared in a vision to warn the Christians of Constantinople against food secretly poisoned during a time of fasting, urging them instead to eat boiled wheat, a practice still observed today on the first Saturday of Great Lent in grateful memory of his continued care for the faithful.

O holy Great Martyr Theodore, soldier of an earthly army who became a soldier of Christ, intercede for us, that we too may stand firm in faith whatever pressure is brought against us. Amen.
