King Stefan Milutin ruled Serbia for nearly four decades during a period of significant territorial expansion, becoming one of the most powerful and influential rulers of the Nemanjic dynasty founded by his ancestors. He is remembered above all for an extraordinary programme of church building, endowing dozens of monasteries and churches across his realm and beyond its borders, among them the Gracanica Monastery, celebrated to this day for the beauty of its architecture and frescoes. Alongside this building work, he was known for considerable personal almsgiving to the poor, channelling much of the wealth his expanding kingdom generated directly into charity and the support of the Church rather than reserving it for his own court. He is venerated as a holy king whose earthly power was placed consistently in the service of the Church and the poor, a pattern the Serbian Orthodox tradition has long held up as the proper use of worldly authority.

O holy King Stefan Milutin, who didst use the wealth and power of thy kingdom to build up the Church and to care for the poor, intercede for us, that whatever we possess may likewise be turned toward the service of God and neighbour. Amen.
