Saint Silouan the Athonite Framed Canvas Icon

Silouan, a Russian peasant who entered monastic life at Saint Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos, experienced early in his monastic years a vision of the risen Christ that left so deep an impression upon him that the whole of his subsequent life of prayer became, in a sense, an effort to remain worthy of what he had been shown. He became known among the monks of the Holy Mountain for an unusual depth of humility and for a teaching he received in prayer and passed on to others, urging the faithful to keep their mind aware of their own lowliness before God while never despairing of His mercy, a balance he held to be the very heart of the spiritual life. He was particularly known for an expansive compassion that extended in prayer to the whole of humanity, including those who had wronged him or the Church, insisting that true love could not draw boundaries around whom it was willing to embrace. His teachings, recorded and published after his repose by his disciple Sophrony, brought his quiet witness to a wide audience far beyond the monastery where he had spent his life in relative obscurity.

O holy Father Silouan, who didst learn to keep thy mind in humility while never despairing of God's mercy, intercede for us, that we too may love without limit and trust in that same mercy in our own weakness. Amen.
