Saint Sergius withdrew as a young man into the dense forest north of Moscow, building a small wooden chapel and living in solitude before being joined gradually by other men seeking the same life of prayer and labour, a community that grew over time into the Holy Trinity Monastery, now known as the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius. He insisted on a life of shared labour and common ownership among the brothers rather than private wealth, a reform that reshaped the character of Russian monasticism for centuries afterward, and he himself continued to work the land and build with his own hands even after his community had grown into one of the most significant monasteries in the land. He is remembered for blessing Prince Dmitri of Moscow before the decisive Battle of Kulikovo against Tatar forces in 1380, sending two of his own monks to accompany the army, a moment widely regarded as a turning point in the gradual unification of Russian lands. He remains the most venerated of all Russian monastic saints, honoured as a father of Russian spiritual and national life alike.

O holy Father Sergius, who didst build a house of prayer with thine own hands and taught thy brethren to hold all things in common, intercede for us, that we too may serve God through humble labour and share generously with one another. Amen.
