Saint Paul the Apostle Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Paul, formerly known as Saul of Tarsus, was a zealous Pharisee who actively persecuted the early followers of Christ until he was struck blind by a vision of the risen Lord on the road to Damascus, a meeting that transformed him utterly and set him upon the very mission he had once sought to destroy. Restored to sight and baptised, he became the most tireless missionary of the early Church, undertaking long and dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean world to found and strengthen Christian communities, and writing epistles that form a substantial portion of the entire New Testament. He endured shipwrecks, imprisonments, and beatings, and was ultimately martyred in Rome, traditionally by beheading, never wavering from the conviction that had overtaken him on that road so many years before. The Church honours him alongside Saint Peter as a pillar of the apostolic faith, and his writings continue to shape Christian theology to this day.
“And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” (Acts 9:4)
O holy and glorious Apostle Paul, who wast turned from persecutor to preacher by the mercy of Christ, intercede for us, that we too may be transformed by that same grace, whatever path we have walked before. Amen.
