Saint Matthew, also known as Levi, worked as a tax collector in Capernaum before Christ called him with the simple words, Follow me, prompting Matthew to leave behind a profession widely despised among his own people and rise at once to follow the Lord. He celebrated his calling by hosting a great feast for Christ at his own house, inviting many other tax collectors and sinners, an act that drew sharp criticism from the religious authorities of the day yet revealed the very heart of Christ's mission to seek out those the world had cast aside. Matthew went on to write the Gospel that bears his name, composed with particular attention to showing how the life of Christ fulfilled the ancient prophecies given to Israel, making it especially valued by Jewish converts to the early Church. Tradition holds he carried the Gospel to Ethiopia or Persia, where he was eventually martyred, having spent his life proving that no past, however compromised, disqualifies a person from being remade entirely by Christ.

“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9)

O holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, who didst rise at once when Christ called thee from thy former life, intercede for us, that we too may follow Him without delay whenever He calls. Amen.
