Saint David rose from tending his father's sheep to become the greatest king of Israel, first proving himself in his youth by defeating the giant Goliath with nothing but a sling and unwavering trust in God, and later uniting the scattered tribes of Israel under a single throne centred upon Jerusalem, to which he brought the Ark of the Covenant amid great rejoicing. Yet his life was not one of unbroken righteousness, for David fell gravely into sin in his dealings with Bathsheba and in the death he arranged for her husband Uriah, a moral failure of the first order that might have ended any other man's legacy in disgrace. What sets David apart, and what the Church has cherished in him across the centuries since, is the depth of his repentance once confronted by the prophet Nathan, a contrition poured out in the Fifty-First Psalm that remains to this day one of the most treasured prayers of repentance within the whole of Christian worship. Remembered as the ancestor of Christ according to the flesh and the author of many of the Psalms still sung in churches throughout the world, David stands as proof that even the gravest fall need not be the end of the story, provided it is met with a truly broken and contrite heart.

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.” (Psalm 51:1)

O holy King and Prophet David, who didst fall gravely yet repent with a whole heart, intercede for us, that whatever sin weighs upon us, we too may find the courage to repent fully rather than to despair. Amen.
