Saint John the Evangelist Framed Canvas Icon
Saint John, the younger brother of James and son of Zebedee, is remembered within the Gospels as the disciple whom Christ loved, the one who reclined closest to Him at the Last Supper and the only one of the Twelve recorded as standing at the foot of the Cross. It was to John that Christ, even while dying, entrusted the care of His own Mother, a final and intimate act of trust that the Church has never forgotten. After the Ascension, John became a pillar of the early Church, later writing a Gospel rich in theological reflection upon the divine nature of Christ, three epistles concerned chiefly with love as the mark of true discipleship, and the Book of Revelation, received while in exile upon the island of Patmos. Tradition holds that he alone among the Twelve Apostles was not martyred, living to a great age and continuing to teach the Church until his peaceful repose, the last living witness to the earthly life of Christ.
“Woman, behold thy son!... Behold thy mother!” (John 19:26-27)
O holy Apostle and Evangelist John, beloved of Christ, who didst stand faithfully at the foot of the Cross when others had fled, intercede for us, that we too may remain near to Christ in His suffering as in His glory. Amen.
