Saint John the Baptist was born to the elderly priest Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth following an angelic annunciation that foretold his unique mission even before his birth, and from his earliest years his life pointed toward a single purpose, preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah. He lived for years in the wilderness in extreme asceticism, wearing rough clothing and eating simply, before emerging to call the people of Israel to repentance and baptism in the waters of the Jordan River, a ministry whose force and clarity drew enormous crowds eager to hear him. It was John who baptised Christ Himself at the Jordan, witnessing the Holy Spirit descend upon Him and the voice of the Father proclaiming Him as the beloved Son, and it was John who first identified Christ publicly as the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world. Christ Himself declared that no one born of woman had arisen greater than John, and the Church honours him as the last and greatest of the prophets, the one who stood at the very hinge between the Old Covenant and the New, pointing always away from himself and toward the One who was to come.

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

O holy Forerunner and Baptist John, who didst point always away from thyself and toward Christ, intercede for us, that we too may decrease in our own self-regard so that Christ alone may increase within us. Amen.
