Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine, undertook in her old age a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where tradition holds she was instrumental in recovering the True Cross upon which Christ had been crucified, an event the Church continues to commemorate each September at the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. She commissioned the construction of churches at some of the most sacred sites of the Christian faith, including those marking the place of Christ's burial and Resurrection in Jerusalem and the site of His birth in Bethlehem, structures that established patterns of pilgrimage and veneration still followed by Christians to this day. Throughout her journey she was remembered for extensive charity, freeing prisoners, providing for the poor, and treating ordinary believers she encountered with a humility unusual for someone of her imperial rank. She is honoured, like her son, with the rare title Equal to the Apostles, her efforts having helped establish the physical and devotional landscape of the Holy Land that pilgrims continue to visit nearly seventeen centuries later.
