Saint Gabriel, born in Soviet Georgia during a period when open profession of Christian faith carried real personal danger, became known for behaviour that struck many of his contemporaries as eccentric or even foolish, a deliberate embrace of what the Church calls foolishness for the sake of Christ that concealed a depth of humility and insight beneath its surface. In 1965, at considerable personal risk, he publicly burned a large portrait of Lenin during a state celebration, an act of open defiance against the atheism enforced by Soviet authorities that resulted in a severe beating and subsequent confinement, the regime preferring to discredit him as mentally unstable rather than create a martyr whose witness might inspire others. He survived this ordeal and went on to serve for decades as archimandrite of the Samtavro Monastery in Mtskheta, becoming known throughout Georgia for quiet acts of charity toward the poor and for a tender care that reportedly extended even to abandoned animals left in his keeping. He was officially recognised as a saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2012, and his relics at Samtavro now draw such a steady stream of pilgrims that the monastery has become one of the most visited religious sites in the entire country.
