Saint Demetrios held high civil and military office in the city of Thessaloniki during the early fourth century, a position of considerable trust and authority under the Roman Empire, yet he used that position to teach the Christian faith openly to the people of the city rather than enforce the persecution his rank might have required of him. When this came to the attention of Emperor Maximian, Demetrios was arrested and imprisoned, and tradition holds that he encouraged a fellow Christian from his prison cell before his own martyrdom by spear shortly afterward. The city of Thessaloniki has venerated him as its protector ever since, crediting his intercession with deliverance during numerous sieges and disasters across the centuries, and the great basilica built in his honour remains one of the most significant churches in northern Greece. He is counted among the Great Martyrs of the Orthodox Church and remains deeply beloved throughout the Greek-speaking world.
