Emperor Constantine, ruling at a time when Christians still faced the possibility of severe persecution across much of the Roman world, experienced before a decisive battle in 312 a vision of a cross of light in the sky accompanied by words promising victory through that very sign, an experience that proved the turning point of his life and, in time, of the whole Roman Empire. Following his victory, he issued the Edict of Milan in 313, granting legal toleration to Christianity after centuries during which the faith had been subject to intermittent and often brutal persecution, and he went on to convene the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, gathering bishops from across the Christian world to address controversies threatening the unity of the Church. He founded the city of Constantinople as a new capital for the empire, a city that would remain the centre of Eastern Christian civilisation for over a millennium, and he received baptism himself shortly before his death. He is honoured with the rare title Equal to the Apostles, recognising the role his reign played in transforming Christianity from a persecuted minority faith into one openly embraced across the Roman world.
