Saint Anthony, a young Egyptian of some means, was profoundly moved upon hearing the Gospel read aloud in church and resolved at once to sell all that he possessed, distribute it to the poor, and withdraw into the desert to seek God in solitude and prayer, becoming in time the father of Christian monasticism itself. He endured years of fierce spiritual struggle in his desert retreat, struggles later vividly described by his biographer Saint Athanasius as direct combat with demonic temptation, emerging from this trial with a peace and discernment that drew increasing numbers of disciples to seek him out despite his preference for solitude. His example, recorded in Athanasius's widely read account of his life, became a foundational text that spread the monastic ideal across the Christian world with remarkable speed, inspiring readers as far away as Western Europe within his own lifetime. He lived to the age of one hundred and five, remembered as the original model for every hermit and monk who has since sought God in the wilderness.

O holy Father Anthony, who didst withdraw into the desert and there contend mightily with the powers of darkness, intercede for us, that we too may find strength in solitude and prayer against every temptation. Amen.
