Prince Alexander of Novgorod won decisive military victories that secured the northwestern borders of Russian lands during a period of grave external threat, defeating an invading Swedish force at the Neva River in 1240, an achievement that gave him his lasting epithet, and two years later defeating the Livonian Knights upon the frozen surface of Lake Peipus in a battle remembered as the Battle on the Ice. Beyond his military success, he proved a shrewd and patient statesman, maintaining a careful and at times humiliating relationship with the Mongol Golden Horde in order to spare his people from further devastating invasion, while firmly refusing repeated offers from the Western Church to convert to Catholicism in exchange for military support against the same Mongol threat. Shortly before his death he received monastic vows, choosing to end his life as a man of prayer rather than solely as a prince and warrior. He is venerated as a defender of Orthodox Russia against pressures from both East and West, and remains the patron of the city of Saint Petersburg and of Russian soldiers to this day.
