Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Aidan, an Irish monk trained in the monastic tradition of Iona, was sent at the invitation of King Oswald of Northumbria to bring the Christian faith to the Anglo-Saxon peoples of northern England, establishing his episcopal seat upon the tidal island of Lindisfarne, which would become one of the most significant centres of early English Christianity. He became known for a deliberate and consistent humility, preferring to travel on foot among the ordinary people of his diocese rather than on horseback, the better to engage them in conversation along the way, and for a generosity that led him repeatedly to give away gifts of horses or money bestowed upon him by the nobility to whoever he encountered in greater need. His friendship with King Oswald proved central to the mission, the king himself reportedly serving at times as an interpreter for Aidan in the early days before the bishop had fully mastered the local tongue, a partnership between throne and altar that helped establish Christianity firmly across the kingdom. Like the other early saints of the British Isles honoured within this collection, Aidan lived and laboured well before the later division between East and West, and Orthodox Christians remember him as a faithful shepherd of the shared early Christian inheritance of these islands.
