Ugandan Coffee Mug

The Orthodox Church in Uganda holds a uniquely important place in the history of African Orthodox Christianity as the country where the movement of indigenous African Christians seeking the ancient apostolic faith began, through the remarkable and visionary figure of Reuben Spartas Mukasa, a Ugandan Anglican layman who became convinced in the 1920s that the ancient Orthodox Church represented the authentic Christianity of the early centuries and who dedicated his life to bringing this faith to his people. Born in 1899, Spartas made contact with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and was received into the Orthodox Church together with a growing community of African followers, establishing what became the African Orthodox movement in East Africa. The Ugandan Orthodox Church grew steadily through the middle decades of the 20th century, producing indigenous clergy and building churches and schools. Uganda holds the additional distinction of having produced the Uganda Martyrs, twenty-two young Christian pages of the court of Kabaka Mwanga who were martyred for their faith in 1886, among whom some were Anglican and some were Catholic, representing the deep Christian roots of Uganda. The Orthodox faithful of Uganda maintain the ancient liturgical tradition in the Luganda and other local languages, expressing the universal Orthodox faith through the cultures of East Africa.
