During his imprisonment he prayed and sang hymns continuously and endured torture before being burned alive in a furnace, commending his soul to God with great peace. He is celebrated with particular solemnity on the first Saturday of Great Lent because of a miracle connected with his memory. When the Emperor Julian the Apostate ordered the food markets of Constantinople to be contaminated with blood sacrificed to idols during the first week of Lent, Saint Theodore appeared in a vision to the Patriarch and warned him, directing the faithful to eat boiled wheat, kolyva, instead.
