In his youth he retreated with his brother Stephen into the forest of Radonezh where he built a small church and cell and began a life of solitary prayer and extreme asceticism, enduring cold, hunger and demonic attacks. Gradually disciples gathered around him and the community grew into the great Trinity-Sergius Lavra which bears his name and which became the spiritual heart of Russia. He refused the office of Metropolitan of Moscow in his characteristic humility. He blessed the armies of Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, the decisive victory that began the liberation of Russia from the Mongol yoke.
