Born Prokhor Isidorovich Moshnin in 1754 in Kursk, Russia, he entered the Sarov Monastery at eighteen and was tonsured a monk with the name Seraphim, meaning fiery or burning. He spent fifteen years as a hermit in the forest, a thousand days and nights in prayer on a rock, and years in total silence. He was attacked and beaten so severely by robbers that he was permanently disfigured and walked with a stoop for the rest of his life, yet forgave his attackers completely. In his old age he opened his cell to thousands of pilgrims who came seeking his counsel and healing, greeting each one with the paschal greeting Rejoice my joy, Christ is Risen, regardless of the time of year. The celebrated Conversation with Motovilov records his teaching on the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. He reposed on his knees in prayer in 1833 and was glorified as a saint in 1903. His feast day is celebrated in January and August.

"Acquire the Spirit of Peace and thousands around you will be saved." (Saint Seraphim of Sarov)

O holy venerable Seraphim of Sarov, most joyful lover of God and radiant bearer of the Holy Spirit, who didst greet every pilgrim with paschal joy and whose very face shone with divine light, intercede before the Lord for all who seek the joy of the Holy Spirit and the peace that passes all understanding.
