His first miracle as a Christian was the healing of a blind man in the name of Christ. When the Emperor Maximian discovered his faith, he was subjected to extraordinary tortures including being burned, drowned, thrown to wild beasts and stretched on the rack, all of which he endured miraculously unharmed, converting many of his tormentors before finally being beheaded in 305 AD. He is venerated as an unmercenary healer, one who heals without payment, and his intercession is sought by the sick throughout the world. A great monastery on Mount Athos bears his name.
