Born around 890, she became the Princess of Kiev through her marriage to Prince Igor. After Igor was murdered by the Drevlian tribe, she ruled as regent with extraordinary intelligence and strength. Around 957 she travelled to Constantinople where she was received with great honour by the Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos and the Patriarch and received Holy Baptism, taking the name Helena after the mother of Constantine the Great. Although her son Svyatoslav refused to convert to Christianity, her faith was passed to her grandson Vladimir who baptised all of Kievan Rus in 988 in what became the most important event in the history of Russia. She reposed in 969 and was glorified as a saint.
