Born Valentin Felixovich Voyno-Yasenetsky in 1877 in Kerch, Ukraine, he became a brilliant surgeon and medical researcher before becoming a priest and then a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1923. He was arrested repeatedly by the Soviet authorities and spent eleven years in prison and exile in Siberia, during which he continued to practise medicine, operate on patients and write theological works. His medical textbook on purulent surgery, written partly in exile, became a standard reference work in Soviet medicine and was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1946. He served as Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea until his repose in 1961, by which time he had gone completely blind.
