The icon depicted a young soldier saint holding a cross and a candle being tortured in various ways, but his name was unknown and the Archbishop of Rhodes, together with the assembled clergy and faithful, prayed for revelation of the saint's identity, whereupon his name Fanourios, meaning he who reveals or makes manifest, was made known. Since that time he has been venerated as the patron of those who have lost something precious, whether a possession, a person, a direction in life or a sense of God's presence. A special bread called Fanouropita is traditionally baked in his honour.
