Born Draganigos Sigouros in 1547 into a noble family on Zakynthos, he became a monk and later Archbishop of Aegina and Hydra before retiring to a monastery on his beloved island. The most celebrated story of his life concerns the murderer of his own brother who came to him in hiding seeking shelter. Saint Dionysios, recognising him, sheltered and hid him, giving him the opportunity to escape, choosing forgiveness over vengeance in a manner that moved all who heard of it. He reposed in 1622 and his body was found incorrupt, a sign of divine glorification. His relics are carried in solemn procession through Zakynthos twice a year.
