On the night of 16th to July 1918 they were led to the basement of the Ipatiev House together with their faithful servants and shot by the Bolsheviks. Witnesses reported that they bore the final moments with prayer, dignity and forgiveness. The family had prepared themselves spiritually during their captivity through prayer, Bible reading and the Divine Liturgy when it was permitted. They were glorified as passion-bearers by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000 and their feast day is celebrated in July, the anniversary of their martyrdom.
