Bishop John served the scattered communities of Russian Orthodox Christians driven from their homeland by the Bolshevik Revolution, ministering first in Shanghai, where he founded an orphanage and personally cared for many of the homeless and abandoned children of that city regardless of their background or faith. Known for an extraordinarily austere manner of life, sleeping only briefly each night and often continuing in prayer until dawn, and rarely wearing shoes even in difficult weather, he combined this severe personal asceticism with tireless practical action on behalf of those in his care. When Communist forces took control of Shanghai, he organised the evacuation of thousands of Russian refugees to a temporary camp in the Philippines and then worked relentlessly, including direct appeals to the United States government, to secure their resettlement abroad when other doors had closed to them. He later served the Russian community in Western Europe and finally in San Francisco, where his life ended, leaving behind a reputation for both fierce personal discipline and an immense, practical compassion for the displaced and the forgotten.

O holy Father John, who didst care for the orphaned and the displaced with tireless compassion, intercede for us, that we too may see and serve Christ in those the world has cast aside. Amen.
